Core units include: Basic botany Plant identification Plant nutrition Plant husbandry: common disorder Soils and growing media in horticulture Planting and maintenance Horticulture machinery: operation and maintenance Optional units may include: Plant display Soft landscaping: trees and shrubs Soft landscaping: herbaceous perennials Plant production from seed Vegetative propagation Horticultural therapy Laying slabs and paving: An Introduction Personal development: self and work Enterprise activity Work placement This course will start in JanuarySuccessful performance at interview including a written task and a group activity.

Career Progression: Possible employment with local authorities, nurseries, landscapers, contractors. Other Information: We have recently re-developed our horticulture facilities including: A horticulture teaching lab with indoor growing facilities and IT resources for learning, teaching and research A purpose-built outdoor horticulture teaching facility with allotments, polytunnel, potting shed and an outdoor classroom A well-equipped science lab Access to the most up to date equipment and machinery We have various employer and Industry links.

We currently work with a wide range of employers and partners giving student opportunities for placements and project work leading, in some cases to employment.

The Level 1 Award in Practical Horticulture focuses on developing essential basic horticultural skills. Developing these skills not only enhances opportunities for employment but provide the foundation for further study and development at levels 2 and 3.

The organisations listed below offer free, career-long professional learning for teachers within all sectors. They also provide up-to-date resources to support delivery of food education. Chefs School aims to encourage culinary and food professionals to work with teachers and children to develop practical skills. At Dumfries House in Cumnock, Ayrshire, children have the opportunity to explore food growing, farming and horticulture. Children can plant, nurture, harvest and prepare vegetables in the education garden, and find out more about where food comes from with a visit to the education farm.
