For years, Beijing landscape architect Yu Kongjian was ridiculed by his fellow citizens as a backward thinker. Yu is at the forefront of a movement that aims to restore the ebb and flow of water to urban environments. His landscape architecture firm Turenscape, which he cofounded in , creates flexible spaces for water to spread out and seep underground, both to prevent flooding and to be stored for later use. By trying to solve one problem at a time—flooding here, water scarcity there—the 20th-century approach to water management has undermined itself. The land area lost to cities has doubled worldwide sinceInstead, drains and pipes carry it away—lunacy, Yu thinks, in places with water shortages.

On April 3, , thirteen landscape architects selected by their firms as among the best and brightest gathered on the University of California Berkeley campus where they were joined by fifteen students from the UC Berkeley graduate program in landscape architecture for a two-day charette calculated to engage, challenge and inspire future leaders of the profession. Climate Change and Human Mobility
A desk that transforms into a space for quiet study and a vessel that lets people grow mushrooms at home are included in Dezeen's latest school show by the University of New South Wales. Also included is a project that explores the benefits of marine habitats and farming, and another that looks at the regeneration of Sydney 's Bays West Precinct. What if site limits become opportunities for regeneration? How can toxic soil and water regenerate intertidal habitats? It also seeks to conserve culture and heritage, and provide facilities for leisure and recreation. At the same time, this riparian area mitigates the flooding caused by future sea-level rise. With trends arising in the localisation of food production and DIY alternatives, as well as a love for houseplants, the concept for mycelia houses was manifested.
While the exhibits in New York helped spur more discourse about which is focused on design strategies as they relate to sea level rise.

Every summer, CMG Landscape Architecture hosts an internship for prospective designers who want to gain real world experience. Our summer internships have provided college students with the opportunity to research relevant issues and topics to the landscape and urban design profession such as democratic public space and sea level rise — all while working in a professional studio. But how can we offer an in-person internship during a major pandemic and current shelter-in-place orders? This was until we received an email from a Faculty member at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who had a bright and intelligent landscape student looking for an opportunity that made us reconsider our internship program.What about a virtual internship? Could a student gain experience without physically being in the studio or on the project site? During his internship, LaVance observed and participated in a mix of project meetings, both internal with project teams and external with CMG clients, our office all team weekly meetings, online lectures and conferences about landscape architecture and one-on-one meetings with CMG designers to learn about their professional experiences.
How Cities are Using Architecture to Combat Flooding
This was the inaugural year of the department's Excellence in Landscape Design Award funded by a generous contribution of the Narayanan Family Foundation. This landscape project demonstrated the incorporation of photovoltaic technology into public spaces at the urban micro-scale. It explored the relationship between vegetation and solar panels, and identified opportunities to site solar arrays in communities that could benefit from the energy produced through the shared renewables market. It then developed a palette of regional grasses, shrubs and vines that could thrive in part to full shade conditions, and identified spatial capacity to site solar arrays in three cities with varied climates and urban conditions. Finally, the project designed an under-utilized lot as a site to test the combination of photovoltaic materials and structures with vegetation at the urban park scale.
As coastal and inland communities plan for and adapt to a changing climate, resiliency has become an area of major concern for many of our clients. Storms of increasing frequency and intensity are impacting the Northeast, putting lives and livelihoods at risk as they batter our shorelines, overwhelm waterways and stormwater systems, and cause millions of dollars in property damage.

Kate Orff is founder of the landscape architecture firm SCAPE and an associate professor of architecture and urban design at Columbia University's graduate school of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. In its assault on New York and New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy revealed vulnerabilities across all social and infrastructure sectors. Sustainability, resiliency and preparedness — all concepts that can seem very abstract — were tested in real time. Three years after Hurricane Sandy, we are more aware of the threat we face, and in that sense, safer. But federal flood insurance policy still largely subsidizes risky construction.

The CaD Studio links Cornell students in landscape architecture with flood-risk Hudson Riverfront communities to explore design alternatives for more climate resilient and connected waterfront areas. Community stakeholders are engaged throughout the studio to help inform the design process and support more usable results for the partner municipality. Each community presents new design challenges and opportunities for design innovation. Students infuse their designs with knowledge, opportunities, and challenges specific to each community that they uncover during site visits and interviews with local stakeholders. After the CaD studio ends, the Estuary Program and its partners are happy to support the community to continue exploring design concepts and linking in potential funding and support.

We are currently in Beta version and updating this search on a regular basis. Forty percent of the human population lives within kilometers of a coastline , with one in ten living under ten meters above sea level. We cannot escape the reality that cities, and their populations, are more vulnerable to flooding than ever. There is therefore a duty on architects, planners, and urbanists to plan and construct resilient responses that can slow, and even reverse, the effects of urban flooding.
